Good vlog. However, the distinction between discussion and discourse remains ambiguous and should be delineated better, especially the concept of "discourse."

Discourse is a formal discussion of a topic, treatise, or an exposition of a thesis with a pedagogical or methodological purpose. In the human sciences, discourse applies to a huge body of statements and utterances that are governed by rules and conventions the user is unconscious of.

Structuralism promotes this as a linguistic model for all communication, thus making it possible to talk about the "discourse" of advertising, or the "discourse" of late 20th century French films.

A discussion is an informal debate, a species of discourse under certain conditions (two people going over the merits of the Xmen dvd, whether it succeeded, or if it was faithful to the source material, met expectations, etc).

Keep up the good work.

Hmm, Anonymous presents a view that Henner is too dense. Others replied that it's interesting. Is this discussion or discourse? Isn't this the process of sharing opinions that develops perceptions on individual & group levels?
Your example delineating between discourse and discussion isn't clear enough...(to me anyways.) It seems like discussion and discourse both shape reality as we see it. Your discussion example of the X-Men DVD, it would seem like that would shape a person's perception/reality of the DVD more than the discourse example because in the discussion example, opinions where exchanged, but in the discourse example, a simple fact was stated: this is a X-Men DVD. Or is that the point? It's supposed to be more "fact-like" in nature?
Another thing that came to mind, the old saying "the victors write history." Reality comes to being by their perception. Will the police be the agitators or will that role be assigned the protestors?
I like your applications to the recent events, makes it much more simulating.

Anonymous,

Please. There is more going on in the deaf community than just what's happening at Gallaudet. I enjoy reading Jon's insights into the issue that is Deafhood, as well as ways of approaching it. Not everything Deaf is in the physical world, and not everything in the physical world revolves around just the Deaf world. Keep that in mind.

Now, what I see here is someone who's trying to facilitate communication on the problems and dilemmas facing deaf people (I won't waste my time on that divisive D/d crap) as well as promoting understanding of our culture.

Matters of mind, culture and soul, like all things taken from the source, is not easily distilled at first. That's what he is trying to do here, make it all accesible to us. Give him some time and a chance to do good.

Thanks.

Annonymous

My vlogs were designed to appeal to "lay" persons. If you find them unfavorable, you are more than welcome to skip my blog link. My work does not stop because of the protests.

I started wearing hats once I figured out that I dont look too half bad in certain kinds. Before, people always said that my kind of hat was a geezer hat. Looks like "geezer" hats are in style.

Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this on deafread.com. Seems like you're doing well, and your research is fascinating. I wonder, when did you become a hat-wearer?

Do us a favor. Don't post anything until the protest is over. Your posts are too heavy -- research kind of posts. Write something for lay people! Thanks.
